The Senior Kindergarten (SK) Program at Calvin Manitoba International School is distinguished by its team-teacher approach to learning.
The SK team includes a dedicated English Language Arts /Math teacher, a dedicated Specialty (Music/Dance/Art/PE) teacher, and a Montessori
teacher. Students receive instruction from all of these teachers, with a consistent focus on hands-
on learning throughout the day.
If you wish to know more about the Manitoba curriculum, please review the Manitoba Education
and Early Childhood Learning resource,
“My Child in School,” which describes learning
outcomes for students in Kindergarten.
Kindergarten is a time for children to learn about what school is like and have fun while learning new things. The children’s natural curiosity and desire to learn are stimulated through organized activities and play. Your child will interact with others, imagine, experiment and explore to add to their knowledge, learn new skills and practice what they have learned.
English language arts learning develops over time and in different situations. Kindergarten
is part of the grade band that begins in Kindergarten and ends in Grade 2.
Kindergarten children use language to investigate topics, issues, and questions based on their
interests and life experiences, literature, and other curriculum areas. Children use language to
talk, ask questions, and think about experiences, stories, and new ideas. They use words,
pictures, and their own experiences to understand different kinds of texts such as art, books,
objects, websites, the land, and oral stories. They share their ideas with others in different
ways such as drawing, writing, telling stories, singing, and role-playing. They learn to express
personal connections to what they have seen and heard.
Kindergarten students observe numbers and patterns in their lives. They use objects
and pictures to show and compare quantities of things up to 10 and they learn to count to 30.
They also learn about patterns and 3-D objects.
Kindergarten children learn by asking questions and investigating their surroundings to begin to understand the world around them and their relationship with it. The themes in Kindergarten Science (trees, colours and paper) provide contexts for student play and guided exploration.

Being Together
Kindergarten children explore who they are in relation to others in their world. They become
aware of how people, live, play and work together to meet basic needs. Your child learns to
express interest in others and discovers connections to people around them. As
kindergarterners explore their social and natural environments, they become aware that they
live in a country called Canada and are part of a larger world.
Kindergarten children learn about living an active and healthy lifestyle. They participate in physical activities for fun and for fitness. They learn ways to stay healthy, look after themselves and recognize unsafe situations. They also learn about following safety rules and getting along with others.
MOREKindergarten to Grade 2 children experiment with ways to express themselves creatively and begin to develop skills and knowledge in one or more of the arts. They explore the questions “who”, “where”, “when”, and “why” related to the arts. They think about the importance and meaning of the arts in their own lives, and in the lives of their families and communities. Children learn to think critically and talk about their experiences with learning the arts.
